SINGAPORE'S MANGROVES,
HOW DO THEY WORK?
Singapore's wetlands are mostly made up of Mangroves. Mangroves protects the land from erosion. If you take a look at the root system, you’ll realise they play a huge part in reducing the strength via the roots. Waves of the ocean are blocked by the mangroves, but it depends the thickness of the mangrove forests along the coastal areas. Besides, mangroves can improve and protect the water quality of water bodies through removing excess nutrients and pollutants.
Mangrove forests only grow at tropical and subtropical latitudes near the equator, like Singapore, because they cannot withstand the cold. Many mangrove forests can be recognised by their dense tangle of prop roots that make the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the water, otherwise known as breathing roots. Usually grown on muddy soil, this plant is remarkably strong and of use to Singapore.
